Promoting Peace...One School At A Time
Goin Latin got the chance to meet author and humanitarian Greg Mortenson of Three Cups Of Tea last week on his first ever visit to Wichita, KS. Mortenson, once mountain climber now humanitarian, has built schools in remote villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan with an emphasis on teaching girls. He believes in promoting peace one child at a time and that by education, a community will grow, become self sufficient and and climb out of poverty. In his talk he said, "Educate a boy, you educate and individual. Educate a girl, you educate a community." This is so true. It's not that boys are any less smart in any way. It's that a girl will grow to be a nurturing person that will want her children educated as well and the growth will continue through out generations slowly bringing a country out of poverty, reducing child births and bettering nutrition.
In Pakistan, he mentions that 3/4th of the schools bombed by Al Qaeda were girls schools. Now why is that you think? Perhaps they know something that works when they see it.
Something Mortenson said that night really inspired me. He said, "The way to solve poverty is to touch it." Well, not all of us can go fly halfway around the world to a remote village and do just this, but Goin Latin is offering you the chance to win his first book and read all about it. The first step to "touching poverty" is to learn about it and spread the word. So here we are, offering you that chance.
